Accessible Evacuation of PWD and the elderly in emergency situations

Another lecture focusing on the crucial topic of emergency evacuation of people with disabilities and the elderly was held yesterday for an international audience. Summary of the training session that took place on August 21st.

The lecture was attended by people from around the world—Kenya, Nigeria,  Ghana, Austria, Hungary, the United States, Greece, Myanmar, Nepal, Morrocco, Ukraine, Philippines, Thailand and many more. 

The speaker, Shelly Rom – VP Int. Affairs at Access Israel, began her lecture by addressing the importance of pre-emergency preparedness. She emphasized the significance of physical readiness, providing accessible emergency services, and preparing evacuation plans for people with disabilities, providing real-life examples to highlight the significance of preparing and customizing evacuation procedures to meet the diverse needs of individuals with disabilities.

The lecture covered various aspects for ensuring safe evacuation, such as identifying accessible exit routes, mapping buildings, assigning evacuation teams, and training staff or volunteers to assist during emergencies.

At the end of the lecture, Ada, a woman with a physical disability, spoke about the meaning of an emergency event for her and her experiences dealing with evacuation after the events of October 7.

The session underscored the importance of preparation and the ongoing need to update and adapt organizational procedures to ensure no one is left behind.
